We were recently contacted by one of our past mentees who wanted to share how the Foundation and his Business gave him the foundation he needed to succeed. He is very grateful (as is the Kent Foundation) to his mentor, Mike Pay.
The Journey of Louis Callaghan-Inge and The Bubble Waffle Company
Louis always had a strong desire to earn his own money. At just 13 years old, his entrepreneurial journey began during a family holiday to Hong Kong. Whilst there, Louis spotted a street food vendor creating egg waffles, a popular local treat. Inspired by the experience and eager to start his own business, Louis made a promise to himself: when he returned to the UK, he would turn this idea into a reality. While still on holiday, he bought a second-hand waffle machine from a reseller site and when he got home he launched his business, naming it The Bubble Waffle Company.
Mentorship with The Kent Foundation
After purchasing his waffle machine and launching The Bubble Waffle Company, Louis began selling his waffles at local farmers’ markets. It was at one of these markets that he was introduced to The Kent Foundation. While the usual age range for participants is between 18 and 30, Louis’ drive and passion stood out. Recognising his potential, The Kent Foundation generously decided to offer guidance and support. With the help and guidance of his mentor, Mike Pay, Louis grew the business, expanding beyond farmers’ markets to include festivals, weddings and events – taking his venture far beyond what he was doing while still in school. He learned countless valuable life lessons through Mike’s mentorship and over the years, his business steadily grew.
Challenges Along the Way
Like any young entrepreneur, Louis faced many hurdles. However, with dedication, passion, optimism and the continued guidance of Mike, he overcame these challenges and kept pushing forward. His hard work and perseverance paid off, and Louis began to gain recognition in the press, appearing on BBC South East News and in local newspapers These moments of publicity helped boost and grow the reputation of the business.
The Growth of the Business
With the support of The Kent Foundation and his mentor Mike, Louis’ business steadily grew. What began with small-scale operations at local farmers’ markets soon expanded to larger events like weddings, festivals and parties. Louis even had friends from school working for him, helping to drive the success of the business. This growth wasn’t just about expanding the brand, but also about Louis gaining valuable experience in managing a business and navigating the challenges of scaling up.
The Conclusion
As Louis approached university, he decided it was time to sell The Bubble Waffle Company, with the understanding that he had reached a natural point in his journey. The business remains an ongoing success. Louis’ journey, from a 13-year-old with an idea to a business owner, taught him many important lessons. “I’ve learned so much along the way,” Louis said. “I’m incredibly grateful for all the support I’ve received from my family, friends, The Kent Foundation and Mike. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their guidance and it’s been a privilege to have had such a valuable mentor and support.”
